Falling standards in clinical skills training in medical schools-Dean

The Dean of Medical Sciences at the University of Cape Coast, Professor Hayford Amono-Coffie, has expressed concern about the falling standards in clinical skills training in medical schools.  According to him, Clinical skills training is a key element in the undergraduate medical curriculum.

Prof. Amono-Coffie said this at the inauguration of the MAERSK Clinic skills laboratory of the UCC School of Medical Science in Cape Coast . The laboratory is part of facilities being provided in the first phase of the school’s infrastructural development project.  Other facilities include rooms fitted with hospital equipment, a surgical operation theater and a bungalow for staff.  The UCC MAERSK Clinical skills laboratory was partly funded by MAERSK Ghana Limited, a shipping firm.  It is to provide medical students with practical medical skills through their undergraduate career.

The Managing Director of MAERSK Ghana Limited, Jeff Gosciniak, said the company’s education programme seeks to help young graduates who desire to excel to build a world class career.  The Vice Chancellor of UCC, Professor Emmanuel Addo Obeng, appealed to the corporate bodies and individuals to support UCC to fully equip the laboratory.
