Reports from the Central Regional Health Service indicate that, less than half of pregnant women who visit health facilities for antenatal care, deliver at those facilities. Lack of education, poverty, activities of prayer camps and negative attitudes of some of nurses and midwives have been cited as some of the causes. This came up during the inauguration of the Central Region Government Registered Midwives Association at Cape Coast .
The national chairman of the association, Razawana Hawa Amoako-Adjei, said the high level of maternal death in the country is unacceptable and charged midwives, nurses and other stakeholders to intensify their education to reduce the death rate. She appealed to them to change their negative attitude in order to compliment government efforts at reducing maternal death.
The Deputy Director of Nursing, Boakye Agyeman, said measures such as motivation and education are underway.
An Executive Member of the Association, Mrs. Theresa Afful called on the midwives to treat pregnant women with respect and passion. She appealed to them not to discriminate against the poor especially people living with HIV-AIDS and Tuberculosis.
